Entrepreneurship Education

When I launched my business in 2020, I had no idea how much there was to learn about entrepreneurship. I Googled my way through applying for a business and vendor’s license, but I quickly realized there were plenty of blind spots—marketing, business finances, sourcing supplies. With a master’s degree in Adult Learning and Development, I had spent 15 years teaching job readiness and workforce education, but despite my professional experience, running a business was a whole new challenge.

To fill in the gaps, I found a business mentor through SCORE and took advantage of their online workshops. As I gained experience, I started thinking about my adult education students—many of whom had mentioned wanting to start their own businesses. Some were retirees looking for a new venture, while others were younger folks earning trade certifications and dreaming of becoming independent contractors. That’s when I realized I could help.

In 2022, I earned my Entrepreneurship Educator Certification through COABE, a national adult education professional organization. Combining my small business journey with my educator training, I created a 10-week entrepreneurship workshop series designed to help people turn their ideas into real businesses. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of teaching over 250 students from all walks of life—many of whom have gone on to launch successful small businesses in areas like ride-share services, music lessons, computer repair, CPR training, arts, food, and more.
